Licence renewal procedure

Currently, all driving licence applications, including renewals, are done in-person at our offices by the licence owner. You cannot apply for a licence on behalf of someone.

For the full list of what you need to renew your driving licence, please visit the renewal checklist page.

The licence renewal process:

  1. Go to the Uganda Revenue Authority website or the Ministry of Works and Transport e-services portal and generate the licence renewal payment registration slip/assessment form.
  2. Go to a bank (of your choice) and pay the appropriate fees to the URA (the bank will provide the account number). Alternatively, you can pay through your preferred mobile money service, PayWay, or using a debit/credit card.
  3. Go to the UDLS offices with the proof of payment/payment registration number, mandatory identification document, and an original copy of the licence you want to renew.
*If you lost or damaged your licence, we shall require a police letter in place of the original copy of the expired licence.
  4. UDLS will issue the renewed licence.

Driving licences are renewed for one, three, and five years. You will get an SMS reminder to renew your current licence before it expires.

Renew a lapsed licence

A lapsed licence is one that has been expired for 24 months (two years) or more. You can renew a lapsed licence after returning to the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV) — a department at the Uganda Police — to be tested for the classes on the lapsed licence.

Please note: UDLS does not handle any payments, and we do not accept cash at our branches. Payments for services are made via the URA website.
